The U.K. government is preparing to intervene in Paramount Skydance\u2019s proposed $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, raising concerns that the merger could reduce media plurality across the country. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy told Parliament that, following discussions with the companies and independent research, her department has notified both parties that she is considering formal intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Nandy, the primary concern is ensuring that U.K. audiences continue to have access to a diverse range of news sources and media ownership. The merger would place several major brands under a single company, including Channel 5, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, CNN International, Paramount+, TNT Sports and HBO Max. She also said the government is considering updating public interest rules so they better reflect the growing importance of streaming and on-demand platforms in today’s media landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The companies have until July 6 to submit additional written representations before a final decision is made. If the government proceeds with an intervention, media regulator Ofcom will examine the public interest implications while the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) will review the transaction’s effect on competition. The findings will help determine whether the merger should face a more detailed investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The proposed takeover has already received approval from regulators in the United States, China, Australia, Germany, France and Saudi Arabia. European Union approval is also expected, provided certain conditions are met, including changes to the Paramount-Universal distribution partnership known as UIP.
